Information Systems News

June & July, 2006

This time of year, as the temperature ramps and hits peak, it becomes clear that you're not the only one with heat issues! Your computer needs to be cleaned out every once in awhile. Follow these basic steps:

1) Make a note of where the power cords go to the back of your machine.

2) Power the system down and disconnect everything from the back and carefully move the system to the outdoors

3) Open the door of the case and inspect your system for loose cables. Get a "can of air" (a can of non-flammable, compressed air for dusting) from your local *-mart and spray out your system - make sure to pay attention to the processor heatsink and fan as well as your system's big fans.

4) Use a NEW (not used) 1-inch paintbrush to gently go over components that still seem dusty.

5) Again inspect your system's cables and components to make sure they're secure and there's adequate airflow in the system.

Finally, bring the system inside but do NOT plug things in until the PC has adjusted to the internal temperature/humidity of your house. Give it at least an hour then begin plugging the computer back to the peripherals.

- Watch out for the dust! And read all manufactures' warnings!

Thanks to Remoah for pointing out to use non-flammable "canned air"
